GRE Math Problem 12

Given: The average (arithmetic mean) of the measures of two angles of a quadrilateral is 60°.

Compare two values:

Column A

Column B

The average of
the measures of the
other two angles

120°

Solution for GRE Math Problem 11:

Average of x and y lies exactly in the middle between x and y. Average of x, y and y lies between x and y, but closer to y. As y is bigger than x, columb B is greater.

  1. ooops, take x<0 and y < 0

  2. Thank you for the feedback! Nice to know, that my blog is read :)

    I suppose, taking x<0 and y<0 doesn't break the solution. Given relation between x and y (x-6

    (x+2y)/3>(x+y)/2

Given relation between x and y (x < y) is absolute. Both for positive and for negative numbers the bigger one os located to the right on number axis.

    For example, x=-9, y=-3
    -9<-3

    (x+y)/2=(-9+(-3))/2=-12/2=-6
    (x+2y)/3=(-9+2(-3))/2=-15/3=-5

    -5>-6

    (x+2y)/3 > (x+y)/2
